Genki Restaurant

I love surprising my kids...

Me: Alright. It's toilet time! Please walk slowly and be back in 2 minutes for group learning.

1. While they were all busy doing their thing in the toilet I quickly set up our...

GENKI RESTAURANT!

It took me roughly 2 minutes :)

2. Meet my super smart student, Yeshvi. It only took me 1 minutes to brief her on the things she will be doing as a host/waitress and off she go! Oh look at her...
She's born to be on the big screen :)

3. Welcome to our Genki Restaurant.

Target sentences
Good afternoon.
Table for four please!
Please have a seat.
Here are the menus.
Please take your time.
I'm hungry.
What would you like to order?
I'd like some...
They would like some...
Thank you.
etc...

4. Ohhh my kids were so good at make believe.

Kids and their imagination :)

6. They were more excited that I am!!! I love my set of Genki kids :)
We had a lot of fun :)

Watch my students in action.

Now I leave you with this video.

As an ESL teacher in Hong Kong, when I teach new words...I make sure it's GENKI  It makes it easier for me to catch their attention and interest in class.

PS: The materials (flashcards/menu) used in our Genki restaurant were all from Genki English. If you are interested, check out their website at www.genkienglish.com and their facebook account at Genki English + GenkiJapan.Net

That's it for now :) Hope you’re having a great weekend. God bless.

Fluppy Clouds

As part of our fun with seasons in Week 6, last week we talked a lot about the four different seasons in our morning circle time so to celebrate our theme, we made...

FLUFFY WHITE CLOUDS
FLUFFY WHITE CLOUDS
FLUFFY WHITE CLOUDS

1. What a GREAT end to our busy week 6!!! This craft is definitely one of my favourites.
o

2. We had all sizes and shapes of cotton balls for our cloud.
.

3. Some of the children decided that holding a handful of cotton was easier than getting them from the pink basket (which still is a good way to promote fine motor skills) and worked their way much quicker than others.

4. While others focused their energy on getting the cotton balls from the baskets...
.

5. And this I just had to share ^__^
Student: No more clouds in the sky, Miss Lucky!
Me: Huh? What do you mean? *I looked out of the window*
Student: Look no more... *she showed me the empty pink baskets*
HAHA SO CUTE!

6. What a tender art and craft we've done this week. Now I let my children fly their imagination in their own room with their fluffy clouds hanging on the ceiling.

Just perfect!
.

I’ll be back soon to share some more school fun! Hope you’re having a great week!

I set my alarm last night for my usual 6am wake up time. And this morning the alarm went off and after hitting snooze a million times I started to do my usual self pep talk to get myself out of bed...and then I remembered something. It's our school's holiday -___- Haha!

Piggy Mask

"The wolf huffs and puffs and the three little pigs exclaim by the hairs of their chiny chin chins..."

Just checking in today to share our art and craft for week 4. I have read the story of The Three Little Pigs to my babies this past week. Our Moral theme for the past four weeks was all about "Diligence" and this book represented it. Therefore, I decided to base our art on it → Piggy Mask.

It was a lot of work. I tell ya... The cutting was a killer! I couldn't feel my fingers after cutting out circles off paper plates. I swear... >__< I tried using a cutter but it wasn't good enough. Therefore, I had to use a pair of scissors instead.

Oh the things I do for my students ♡♥

Despite the hard work, it never ceases to amaze me how cooperative my kids are during our art and craft time. Love that!!!

I made them paint their own plate.

And draw their pig's nostrils.

Cutness overload ♡♥

SOOOOO CUTE!

This was, hands down, their favorite activity of the week. And I absolutely enjoy being crafty with my babies. Expect lots of cute art and craft this year ♡♥ I'm bound to make this year VERY colorful and crafty!

Until then, have a blessed new week everyone!!!

My Behavior Management (2013 - 2014)

Week 4 is officially over and boy, I'm exhausted! There has been so many changes with our school curriculum and almost all of the teachers in our school (and other four branches) are having difficulties. Breathe in and smile!!! That's what I've been telling myself lately. I say it would take us another two weeks or even a month to get used to all these changes. It's alright...lalala.

more on the subject

My behavior management for this new school year? It's pretty simple and so far...effective. It really works for me and it made learning more fun and smooth in my classroom. Allow me to share it with you ^__^

  • My star chart :) Good behavior gets a star at the end of the day. I've placed this next to our door so my students' can see it. This is definitely one of my cutest board in my classroom. My principal loves it.
Star Chart

  • Then there's my Behavior Meter ♡♥ This helps me monitor my student's daily behavior. Very good students will receive a star at the end of the day. This meter really helps to keep them motivated and well behaved. Works like magic!
PS: The clipart that I used is from Genki English :)

  • And lastly like any teacher, I LOVE when my students behaves well in class. My kids are only 3 to 4 years old and I believe that they all should be rewarded (not daily) but weekly. So I decided to reward their good performance in school on every Friday. The top 3 star students will get the chance to pick anything from Pinkabelle every Friday (she holds all of my weekly gifts).
PINKABELLE

Apart from being super cute, Pinkabelle plays various roles in our classroom. She sits and watches over our class to make sure they are doing the right thing. All of my kids think she's beautiful and kawaii (that means cute in Japanese). Pinkabelle is definitely a great addition to our class this year :) And I'm really hoping that Pinkabelle can be a good mentor to my students and help them with their
learning journey.

That's about it :)

How about you? What's your behavior management like?

Weekly Best Behaved Gifts.

Since my students are being trained to write in class, I decided to pick erasers as my weekly gifts. Today I bought some cute and fun erasers to put in Pinkabelle. Weekly best behaved students will get the chance to pick one. My students and I decided to call my classroom mascot → Pinkabelle

Ohhhhh they're all so colorful and cute ♡♥♥

I'm really hoping that these would encourage my students to try to write. Wish me luck ^__^

Playgroups in Hong Kong and Basic Tips

Hello,

Here in Hong Kong, playgroups accept babies between 6 and 24 months. Yes. It may seemadvance and sound crazy at first but it's all worth it. Education here is definitely tough and unreasonable (for some), but after teaching for nearly 7 years...I've learned to live with it.

My first love in this teaching field was PLAYGROUP.

Playgroup = easy and fun :P

When I started teaching playgroups, I had difficulties in getting their interest and attention. It was a love and hate relationship. Parents would yawn and roll their eyes. They thought my classes were boring. I was dragging myself to work feeling frustrated. But of course, that didn't stop me from teaching. I became more determined! I bought some books about babies and learned more about them. It was difficult at first but it got easier as time goes by... :D

The Basics

Parents here in Hong Kong put their babies early to get training for their dream kindergaten interview (this happens when the baby reached 18 months). They usually go twice a week. As silly as it seems, it really benefits their babies a lot.

At a good Playgroup babies will:

  • have fun playing
  • enjoy being with other babies
  • explore a new world with new experiences
  • develop a weekly routine
  • play with different toys
  • relate to other adults
  • learn and develop new skills

These qualities are very important and essential for the baby's first year here in Hong Kong.

Teachers need to avoid...

Playgroups are not like other ordinary classes. One little mistake could mean disaster. Here are a few things to avoid:
1. Talking too much. Babies get bored easily. Their attention span is usually only up to 10 minutes (max). Keep your words simple and go straight to the point. You're obviously giving instructions to the parents anyways. So don't go wasting your time talking to babies as they don't understand you. And for them to be in an English speaking environment is fairly enough.

2. Black and White Flashcards. Babies nowadays are much more difficult to please(thanks to YouTube for the free colorful videos). Showing them flashcards that are not colorful is just a total waste of time. You have to show them in bright colours and they have to be BIG! My favorite are the ones from Genki EnglishThey are BIG, BRIGHT and with FACES on them! My playgroup babies love tapping on them and those colourful flashcards gets their attention easier than small (black and boring)ones.

3. Singing too much. Don't sing for more than 10 minutes because you don't want to lose the baby's attention/focus. Especially during circle time where they sit with their parents. And do incorporate musical instruments to lighten up musical experience.

4. Be a clown. This is actually one of the most important tip I could give any playgroup teachers. You have to be like a  jolly clown. For instance, use silly and fun facial expressions and learn to play around with your voice. This is one of the best way to a successful playgroup class.

Moreover, teachers should also have fun and should lower down their expectations to avoid getting disappointed. We should not forget that they are still in diapers. We can't expect a lot (though their parents thinks otherwise). After all, they're just babies!

Lastly, don't be afraid of using BIG (complicated) materials in your playgroups. They may look inappropriate for babies but you'll never know untill you try. The bigger the materials you use, the better you get the babies attention.

With confidencebright colourspositivityjolly movement and clown-like voice, playgroups becomes the easiest class to teach. I hope this post helps you deliver a better and fun playgroup class.
